Week 10 @ Clearleft

This week I got stuck into user testing, which yielded some interesting results. I managed to get three members of the UX team to spare some time and got really valuable pointers from them. I used their feedback to refine my designs and knocked them up into wireframes, a selection of which you can see below:

One of the things that the user testing showed wasn’t working well on my paper prototypes was the navigation, which people found a little enigmatic. As I think I’ve mentioned, the information architecture has been one of the biggest challenges with this project and I’d like to spend a lot more time just on that, if I had it. I’ve clarified that navigation by adding an explanatory line beneath the main label eg Create has the line ‘ideas, prototypes & guidelines’ beneath it to give users more of a sense of what lies beneath. I also added the double diamond to the home page as a means of navigation, in place of the drop-down function I’d had on the paper prototypes. I think this works better, but I’ll need to test again to validate that. One of the other big changes was scrapping the upload page and moving that functionality into a pop-up box instead, which I think is more logical. I created a couple of new pages at this stage, a section hub page and a person’s activity page, as these felt necessary to present a complete picture. It’s been really interesting to test with UX designers, as they jump back and forth from being in a user mindset to a designer mindset. It’s been useful to get their views from both sides of the coin and I’m really lucky to have such an experienced bunch of people to get advice from.

Next up, it’s round 2 of user testing on these wireframes, so I’ll let you know how that goes next week. Wish me luck 🙂
